Will the Post 9/11 GI Bill Benefits Pay Out-State Tuition?

My dad has been in the Navy for over 25 years and is in the process of retiring. He served in Virginia but will be retiring in Indiana where we live. He has signed over all of his GI bill benefits over to me. I want to go to Virginia Welseyan next year which is in Virginia, it is a yellow ribbon school. How would my benefits work by going out of state. Would I get any housing benefits at all? — Kaitlyn

Well first Kaitlyn, as you probably know, the VA will pay your tuition up to the in-state public school undergraduate program maximum for Virginia. Right now it is $326 per credit hour for tuition and $3,840 for fees. Because your school is a Yellow Ribbon school, your school has agreed to pay up to a specified amount, not exceeding 50% of the amount not covered by the Post 9/11 GI Bill. The VA will pay an equal amount.

What I can’t see from the school’s website is what (or if) they charge for out-state tuition. If they do charge more for out-state students, then your portion left to pay may be more than a student not paying out-state tuition might pay, but it still shouldn’t be much.

As far as your housing allowance, you will get paid at the E-5-with-dependents for the zip code of your school. That amount calculates to $1,452 per month.

Hi, I was wondering what’s my next step? My husband says “He transferred his G.I Bill over to me.” I want to start school in Jan. of 2011. I asked him what to do but, I’m not getting straight answers so I’m assuming he has no idea. Do I need to start school first? what papers do I fill out if any? etc…I have no clue what to do once I register for school.

Once the transfer is approved, the status on the TEB Website, where he made the transfer, will change from Pending to Approved and the approval date will be in the Date Block. Once that happens, then you need to fill out VA Form 22-1990e either online through the VONAPP Website or download the form, fill it out and send it in according to the instructions on the form. In return, you will get back a Certificate of Eligibility that you will need when you register for classes. That is it!
