What Will My Dad’s G.I. Bill Pay for Me to Go to School?

Facts: Father meets requirements to transfer post GI Bill education benefits to me He is currently still in the Army I would be enrolled FULL TIME in an actual classroom NO online classes Location of school: Huntsville, AL Questions: 1) How long does it take to receive the certificate of eligibility? My dad submitted the request online on March 23, 2010. It is now May 2, 2010 and we haven’t heard anything back yet. He is currently in Iraq and I don’t want to keep worrying him about it if this is the normal waiting time. 2) After I get my certificate, what will be my next steps? My hopes were to get approved early so my money would be in by August, when school starts so I won’t have to pay out of pocket. Do you think this is likely? 3) Housing stipend: Can I get the stipend if I choose to live off campus? I’ve heard rumors (maybe facts) that I would be getting what a E5 would get paid monthly in BAH. This sounds a little fishy to me because that amount is $1146 a month. Will they actually pay me this amount or only how much my apartment costs? 4) My dad requested that I get 12 months for me to use his GI Bill. Therefore, I will be taking summer classes. Will I be able to get the housing stipend for summer school? Thanks — Jaz

Hello Jaz. I’m going to answer your questions in the order you asked them:

1) It can take 8-10 weeks to get your Post 9/11 G.I. Bill Certificate of Eligibility, so give it another month to six weeks.  If you haven’t heard anything by then, contact the VA.

2) After getting your Certificate of Eligibility, your next step is to take your certificate to your school and register. Be sure to talk to your school’s VA Representative to get the Post 9/11 G.I. Bill side of your enrollment processed correctly. The VA will send your school the money for your tuition and fees, up to the in-state maximum. Right now, for Alabama, that per credit hour amount is $291. Anything over that amount, if there is anything, will be your responsibility.

3) Whether you live on campus or not has nothing to do with whether you receive the housing allowance, or how much you get. As long as your rate of pursuit is more than half-time and you taking at least one class on campus, you will receive the housing allowance. As far as how much housing allowance you’ll get, what you heard is correct.  You’ll get paid at the E-5-with-dependents rate for the zip code of your school. Your amount of $1,146 is the correct amount for 2010.

4) You’ll be able to get the housing allowance provided you take at least one on-campus class and your rate of pursuit is greater than half-time, which usually means taking at least 7 credits per term.

Whew Jaz, I think I got everything answered.  Good Luck with your education endeavours!
