Question:
Hello, I’m writing you from Texas City, Texas. I just got out of active duty Army in Feb of this year on honorable terms as part of the 4 year agreement I had with the government. Anyway, I started my apprentice school in Aug of this year. I had to fill out an application for Houston Community College in my classroom which is held at the union apprentice school house. I go to school from 6pm to 10pm for two nights a week. Am I entitled to use my GI Bill and if so, how much would I get a month? Also, would I be getting back pay for the time I started school? -Brandon

Answer:
I’ll try and answer both questions for you Brandon. The Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB) covers apprenticeships where the Post 9/11 GI Bill does not, so you want to apply for the MGIB if you have not already.

For the first six months of training, you’ll get $1,026 per month.  For the next six months, you’ll receive $752.40 per month.  After the first 12 months, you’ll get $478.80 per month for the remaining months of the apprenticeship.

After applying for the GI Bill, you’ll receive a verification of attendance for that both you and your school certifying official must fill out and return back to the VA.

As far as back pay, the VA usually doesn’t pay back pay.  Pay starts at the time you apply for education benefits and when the VA receives your enrollment form from your school. However, you have nothing to lose by asking; their phone number is 1-888-442-4551. They accept calls Monday through Wednesday from 7:00 am to 5:00pm Central Standard Time. Good Luck!
