If I Take One Online Class, Can I Still Get the Housing Allowance?

I am an active duty Army veteran, eligible for 100% of the Post 9/11 GI Bill. I just started attending Devry University, which seems to operate a bit different from traditional colleges or universities. Devry offers a 12-credit semester, a total of 16 weeks, but splits them into two 8-week terms of 6 credits (2 courses a term). So, as an example Term A(8 weeks, 6 credits for 2 courses), term B(8 weeks, 6 credits for 2 courses), for a total of 16 weeks, 12-credits. However, one of those classes in a term may be online. My question is, with the semester organized that way, if attended full time, but one of the two classes in the terms is online, one on campus, will I still get my full housing allowance? It’s all very confusing I know. — Joseph

Actually Joseph, it isn’t confusing at all. To get the Post 9/11 GI Bill housing allowance, your rate of pursuit has to be greater than half-time, which is normally at least 7 credits per term, and you can’t take all online classes.

Actually students taking all online classes get around this by taking one on-campus course and they get the housing allowance; you taking one online class will not affect your Post 9/11 GI Bill housing allowance in any way.

In looking at the VA-approved schools listing, DeVry is listed, so there shouldn’t be an issue with the split term, so you should be good to go.  Easy, wasn’t it!

If I take 2 (term A) 8 week classes on ground and 2 (term B) 8 week classes online can I still get the housing allowance for that semester? B

No, not right now. Online only students are not authorized the housing allowance at this time. Starting in August, online-only students would be able to draw up to $673.50. If you had one ground class while you were taking your online courses, then you would get the housing allowance provided you are taking enough credits to be considered a greater-than-half-time student. If you aren’t taking enough credits, then it wouldn’t do you any good to take the one ground course.
