If I Attend School Part-time, How Does This Affect My MGIB Benefits?

I have just received a letter of eligibility of the MGIB. I currently attend school as a part-time student and was wondering how this effects any of my MGIB benefits. I also new to the benefit and was wondering when I could receive my first check. I have drill on 06 Mar 2010. — Anthony

It really comes down to further defining what you mean by part-time, Anthony. When you talk about drilling on 6 Mar, 2010, I’m assuming you are talking about the Montgomery GI Bill – Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR) and not the one for active duty – Montgomery GI Bill – Active Duty(MGIB-AR).

Under the MGIB-SR, you are paid by your status as a student:

Full time $333.00
¾ time $249.00
½ time $165.00
Less than ½ time $83.25

Half-time is usually considered taking at least 6 credits per term. Full-time is normally 12 credits.  Check with your school and see what their half-time student status is and then you can gauge yourself according to how many credits you are taking.

As far as when you would get your first check, plan on around 10 weeks from when you apply.  The VA has been backlogged ever since the new Post 9/11 GI Bill started in August 2009 and they have not gotten caught up yet.  The delay will get shorter once they get on top of things.
