How Do I Get a Housing Allowance and Take Online Classes?

I want to start going to online school, but I learned that I won’t receive BAH if I do all my classes online. If I were to do my associates online, and then take training on-campus at a different school, will the new GI bill cover both? And will I still get housing? — James

Yes, James, if you do it correctly. The VA will pay you BAH, if you take an online program at one school and at least one campus-resident class at another school. The trick is:

  • taking both the online and campus-resident classes during the same term, not doing one program and then the other.  You only have to take one campus-resident class to get the BAH.
  • the classes you take in both programs must be part of your degree plan.

If you take, for example, online classes for a few terms and then follow it with campus-resident classes, you would only get BAH for the campus-resident classes.  Do it smart and you can make it work.

Nothing happen quick when talking about the VA and the GI Bills. Apply for benefits through the VONAPPs website. Your application will be processed and you should start to see some money in about 12 weeks. Ever since the Post 9/11 GI Bill started in August, the VA has been swamped with benefit claims.
