Question:
I am currently interested in using my GI Bill in an overseas school in Australia. I was wondering if this is possible? Are there any accepted schools overseas? If so what are the limitations to using it overseas? — Joshua

Answer:
Yes Joshua, it is possible to use your GI bill benefits to attend a foreign school. First, your school has to send a request to the VA with the answers to 15 questions.

As far as your housing allowance, it will be a fixed amount. For 2009, it was$1,333 per month and you will also get the $1,000 per academic year for a book stipend.

To determine how much the VA will pay your school in tuition and fees, the VA will take an average of the tuition and fee charges for the schools in the state where you claim residency. That average will be the amount they will pay your foreign school.  If your tuition and fees are higher than what the VA will pay, the additional amount will be your responsibility to pay.

I have never used my GI Bill. I am about to get out of the military and I’m wondering if I can use my GI Bill even when I will no longer be in the military? and if so, can I use my GI Bill outside the U.S.A?

Yes you can use your GI Bill outside the U.S., just ensure your school is VA-approved. If you have the Post 9/11 GI Bill, it pays up to $439.69 per credit and up to $13,713.88 per term for fees to go to a foreign school. You will also get a housing allowance of $1,333 per month and the normal books stipend of $41.67 per credit, up to $1,000 per year. You have up to 15 years from your discharge date to use your New GI bill.

If you are have the Montgomery GI Bill, then your delimiting date is 10 years from your date of discharge and the pay structure is the same to attend a foreign school as it is here in the U.S.
