I am about to use up the remainder of my Chapter 30 MGIB (5 months left). My active service entry date is 2004 and I served twice in Iraq (currently I am in the ARNG). I still able to use a portion of the new GI Bill after exhausting the MGIB? I have been told I can use the 9/11 Gi Bill for 12 months after exhausting the MGIB, and I would like a confirmation. — Josh

Yes Josh, you should be able to get an additional 12 months of benefits under the Post 9/11 GI Bill once you exhaust your Montgomery GI Bill benefits – that is the key. If you switch before exhausting your MGIB benefits, you would only get the same number of months that you have left on your MGIB.

As long as you stay in the ARNG, you also qualify for the MGIB-SR, however, under the Rule of 48 if you qualify for multiple GI Bills, you can only get a maximum of 48 months of GI Bil benefits.
